Just a little blog to try and communicate what we are accomplishing here, and also what we are trying to accomplish. Not much, just a self-sustained life full of peace and love and all that other "hippy" nonsense. What we are looking for really, is just a better Happier world for our kids. Don't you want the same? We've been at this for a few months, so some of this will be catch-up, don't get bored or bitchy, just try and keep up. Peace and Love Y'all

Laundry Soap
Made homemade laundry soap today. I made it about 2 months before we moved which was 9 months ago and I made 8 gallons this time, so I hopefully do not have to make any again for a while. I made it with Borax powder, washing soda and Fels Naptha, which is a laundry bar soap. This detergent works very well and cost me about $.50 a half gallon. sure beats buying laundry soap and I know what is in it.

I didn't realize that I did not put up the measurements of what I used and how I did it.
ReplyDeleteI started with 1 gallon of water in a pot on the stove and got the water hot, then I took 1 bar of Fels Naptha laundry soap and grated it with a cheese grater, which I only use to make soap. Then placed the soap in the pot of hot water, then I measured out 2 cups of borax and 2 cups of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda and mixed it into the pot after the Fels Naptha melted. I put 3 gallons of warm water into a 5 gallon backet and then after I poured in my soap mixture and mixed it all together. I use a paint mixer that I attach to my cordless drill to mix it all together. I let it sit overnight to cool and then it forms into a gel. In the morning I take the paint mixer and very slowly mix it back into a clumpy liquid. I try to break it down as much as possible then I pour it into my jugs. I only use about 1/4 of a cup per load. So I should have enough for a while, even for a family of 5.
I hope this is of use to someone one day. We have saved literally hundreds of dollars and I always know what is in my laundry soap.
